Junior Umpire Program
In Spring 2023, we are launching a New JUNIOR UMPIRE PROGRAM!!
JUNIOR UMPIRE PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
A junior umpire is a responsible child ideally between the ages of 12 and 17 years old who will be USA Softball-trained to umpire games, beginning with the 8U division. The junior umpire will begin under the supervision of adult USA softball-trained umpires, then graduate to splitting games with other junior umpires (on behind the plate, one working the bases, both splitting the umpire fee), then finally petitioning the league to work games alone (and receiving the entire umpire fee, around $40 per game).
BENEFITS OF A JUNIOR UMPIRE PROGRAM:
The junior umpire program will bring many benefits to our league, including:
- Getting ahead of the umpire shortage that is affecting leagues all over Southern California;
- Empowering our girls with all sorts of life lessons, skills, maturity, and confidence;
- Reinvesting registration fees right back into our Redondo Sunset community;
- Inspiring younger players by giving them the chance to see a girl just a little bit older than they are calling their games!
REQUIRED TRAINING:
January 28 in Palomar (San Diego)
(NOTE: Bring a blank check to purchase your own umpire shirt, hat, and clicker – depending on how many girls sign up, the league may reimburse this cost later. ALSO, bring a sack lunch.)
